APS employees surprise Wilson Primary School students for the holidays
While their day jobs focus on helping to keep the lights on for homes and businesses throughout Arizona, a group of APS employees delivered a special surprise that lit up the faces of 45 first and fourth grade students with holiday magic.
Since 2012, APS employees from the meter technology and operations team have partnered with Wilson Primary School, located near central Phoenix, to participate in an annual holiday event. The school invites Valley organizations to sponsor classrooms with goodies and gifts.
After receiving ‘Letters to Santa’ wish lists written by the students , APS employees went shopping and purchased gifts from their own pockets to make the holidays brighter for this local school. Now a tradition for the team, these APS employees have given back to more than 500 Wilson students to date.
On the big gift delivery day , APS employees surprised the eager children, with colorfully gift-wrapped presents like toy trucks, dolls and new shoes, followed by playing a couple rounds of holiday bingo and hosting a classroom pizza party to finish off the morning’s celebration .
“The best part of my day was seeing all of the first and fourth graders brighten up with joy when they saw their presents,” said Katie Richards, APS Director of Meter Technology and Operations. “While they were excited to receive their surprise gifts, my team and I walked away with the biggest present which was being able to give back in such a special way. It’s about putting smiles on kids’ faces for us.”
