Cotton Transmission Corridor 500kV/230kV

Sunset over the southwest valley

aps

Voltage: 500kV and 230kV
Estimated Completion Date: 2031/2032
Location: SW Valley Region (Gila Bend, Buckeye, Goodyear and Avondale)

Why this project is needed:

New 230 kilovolt (230kV) and 500 kilovolt (500kV) power lines are needed to improve electrical infrastructure and enhance reliability for current and future APS customers in the Western Maricopa County region. We have begun studies to determine appropriate routes for these lines, which will connect new and existing substations in Gila Bend, Buckeye, Goodyear and Avondale.

Open Houses

In Person Open Houses:

Your input is very important to us. We recently held our first round of in-person open houses on March 25th, 26th, and 27th, where you could speak one-on-one with team members, learn more about the project, ask questions and provide additional comments.

Virtual Open Houses:

If you were unable to attend our in-person open house you can visit our virtual open house.

We encourage your comments and input related to the project, especially regarding potential route alignments.

Although comments are encouraged throughout the duration of the project, we request that you submit them during the open house comment period, which ends April 25, 2025. This allows for timely review and consideration of your input during the siting process.

Project Details

  • Approximately 53 miles of new 230kV and 500kV transmission lines interconnecting multiple substations
  • Crosses primarily private, BLM and State Trust Land
  • Avoids protected areas, such as the Buckeye Hills Regional Park, Sonoran Desert National Monument and Estrella Mountain Regional Park
  • Federal land crossings (BLM) will require undergoing a NEPA process prior to submitting for a CEC with the state.

Project Features

This project will primarily include Monopole (single-pole) structures, but a variety of steel structure types may be used. These structure heights typically range from 130 – 200 feet depending on routing, terrain and crossing of existing structures, including elevated roads and other power lines.

Any opportunity to use existing power line routes for the new structures will be considered. However, new rights of way and/or easements, approximately 120 to 200 feet wide, will be needed.
